In the wake of the Galactic Alliance’s theft of the latest Imperial star destroyer from its berth in the Mon Calamari orbital shipyards the Dark Lord of the Sith and ruler of the Empire is slightly put out; to say the least. Even though the seizure of the Imperious cost the Alliance some of its personnel, in particular Admiral Gar Stazi’s old friend and confidant Captain Yorub, it is blow against the Sith and their Imperial lackeys that has been telling. As a result Darth Krayt, supreme leader of both the Empire and the new Sith has travelled to the world of Dac and its capital New Coral City formerly known as Ackbarea. The Sith Master is not noted for taking trips outside of the Sith Temple on Coruscant let alone making interstellar voyages so it could safely be assumed that his visit to this particular world is not one of pleasure, or at least it will not be a pleasant experience for its inhabitants.
Naturally Darth Krayt’s intentions are to deliver a message, but it is not solely a message aimed at the Mon Calamari people it is one that is aimed at the entire galaxy. In the assembly chambers of New Coral City Darth Krayt has gathered the various leading officials along with Gial Gahan, the former senator for the Mon Calamari, a squad of loyal stormtroopers, Darth Azard, Darth Wyyrlok and several other Sith in order to make his point. Essentially this all boils down to the fact that the Dark Lord brooks no dissent or rebellion and that their will be an immediate decimation of the entire Mon Calamari population starting with those in the assembly chamber. As the stormtroopers and Sith begin the purge all of this is being broadcast live throughout the galaxy via the chamber’s floating holocam systems for all the subjects of the empire to witness. Thus it becomes a reminder to anyone else out there in the deeps of space that this is what will happen if you decide to disobey the Sith, there will be dire consequences.
Can nothing be done to prevent such an atrocity, are the Sith finally the supreme rulers of the galaxy with no one of any significance to challenge their reign of darkness? It even seems as if the very fear and terror generated by the slaughter of innocents has invigorated Darth Krayt himself, slowing the process of the Yuuzhan Vong implants that are eating away at his body. He feels far better than what he has in the years since the invasion of that intergalactic species many decades ago. Still all is not peachy with things, even as it seems that the Sith hold on the galaxy has become virtually unstoppable there are other elements moving and gathering their own strength, the reign of Darth Krayt is not absolute even though he would like to believe and wish otherwise.
As the saying goes, the devil is in the details, and the Sith have not completely taken care of all the details needed to make their reign complete and total. Certainly they do control the largest most significant power within the galaxy to date and their military and economic might is second to none but unfortunately for them they have made several critical errors in their attempts to establish the vision of Darth Krayt. The first of those was not taking care of former Emperor Roan Fel, still followed by a contingent of loyal Imperial forces as well as his own Imperial knights; the second error was in attempting to kill Admiral Gar Stazi this operation failed dismally and he managed to escape with a new prototype star destroyer thrown into the bargain. The third and final mistake is the misguided decimation of the Mon Calamari, up until then this species had not significantly taken sides for or against the Sith and were thus uninvolved in any conflict. Darth Krayt’s actions have meant that where he had a passive client species building vessels for his fleet he now has a race that is intent on his downfall, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes is the saying. Here the Dark Lord is repeating an error made by his predecessor, Darth Sidious felt that the Mon Calamari could be easily cowed and subdued he learnt the cost of that at the Battle of Endor.
So rather than cow the galaxy and its multitudes into not rebelling against the Sith regime all Darth Krayt has effectively done is established fertile soil in which the seeds of rebellion can be planted and hopefully take root. A chance meeting between two Imperial Knights and the niece of Gian Gahan, Monia Gahan who is a pilot with the Galactic Alliance Core Forces (GACF) is the no doubt the first such seed. The three of them then stage a rescue of Monia’s fellow Alliance pilots from a holding compound and from their things rapidly blossom into a major problem. Monia, her comrades along with Imperial Knight Sigel Dare manage to escape on a stolen Imperial Shuttle from Dac, but that isn’t the end of the problems for the Sith. Master Treis Sinde, Sigel Dare’s partner on their mission to Dac has managed to evade death at the hands of Darth Azard and is no doubt linking up with nascent Mon Calamari resistance cells to get ready to really cook up some serious problems for the Sith.
Alan Robinson’s artwork and Brad Anderson’s colours give this particular issue a lush, animation feel to the whole thing. Reading this issue I felt it was like watching an episode of the animated Clone Wars saga that was released at the time of Episodes II and III, it certainly has that look and feel to it. And as always with these comics there is just that continuing sense of atmosphere as well as the odd tribute to the original movies, in particular with the attempted escape from Dac via the Imperial hangar bay very reminiscent of the attempted escape from the Death Star as well as the rescue of Princess Leia, ah heady halcyon days.
