The first question to be answered about this particular episode in the Twilight franchise is do I have to see all the other previous episodes to be able to watch and understand this one? I’d say if you’ve watched the first flick and then went to see this one you’d be pretty much alright. From my point of view it’s pretty easy to pick up on what is going on here…it’s not quantum physics nor is it Keynesian economics…So what is going on in this flick? What is the truth behind Breaking Dawn…on the surface it is portrayed as a vampire flick as well as falling into the romantic chick flick category. Of the two categories I’d say the romantic chick flick angel is the dominant one, the vampire horror element is just there to put it in a different light from other teenage romance flicks featuring the obligatory emo whinging wallflower that is transformed into a beauty or hunk depending on the leading protagonist’s gender.

Essentially normal girl meets vampire boy they fall in love, suffer, eventually get the courage to get married and then decide to go off to some exotic locale and have lots of steamy wild action that really doesn’t do anything for plot or story development and seems to be more for the titillation factor. It’s all about the leads, Edward and Bella although in reality it should be about the story…though just what kind of story is being told here? Is it a tale of love, a budding romance blossoming into fulsome love? Or is it something else entirely, sitting in the cinema wondering about this I got the feeling as things moved towards a conclusion there was something decidedly darker than all that was being shown on the screen.

Of course to make things complicated normal girl also has an old friend who just happens to be a guy and also a werewolf and this in turn makes for a rather strange love triangle shtick just to spice things up. What is it nowadays with pairing werewolves and vampires nowadays? One wonders if this is the influence in society of White Wolf’s ultimately popular World of Darkness RPGs or even the original Underworld movie? Certainly it seems nowadays whenever someone makes a flick involving vampires there has to be werewolves in on the action…regardless of whether or not they fit into the movie.
So Bella is getting ready to marry her vampire beau Edward whilst friend and werewolf Jacob is decidedly distraught over the entire scenario. Even though one part of the triangle is not happy with the situation things look decidedly peachy. Every young woman’s dream, a white wedding, a fantastic looking guy for a husband who appears to be well off financially and a burning desire…but what’s with this strange dream where the bride and groom stand atop a pile of bloodied corpses their wedding guests…and who are the three creepy guys who are standing before them (they might have something to do with previous flicks I confess so my not knowing them is remiss here)? This is not the kind of dream you’d expect the bride to be having…
Things get stranger though when Edward gets Bella pregnant, in normal circumstances this is often what happens when married couples engage in conjugal relations with each other on their honeymoon, especially if there is a pristine tropical island with a well maintained villa. Things are bound to ensue though with Edward being a vampire his capability to get his wife pregnant is something that seems to have not been considered…an oversight on his behalf? Certainly the ensuring pregnancy causes much consternation and it looks like everything is about to go pear shaped.
Strangely it’s when this development is introduced into the whole story that things take a turn for the interesting; in fact up until this point it was pretty dull. I was almost contemplating walking out of the cinema so bored with watching their impeding wedding or seeing Edward and Bella romp about the place in their idyllic tropical paradise had I become, it was just so much fluff that didn’t in my estimation really drive things along. But once the implications of the marriage and its physical union occur then it starts to pick up a bit of tempo and starts to get a slightly darker tinge. Slightly I say although in the closing stages it becomes downright gruesome and then ends with a rather possibly disturbing finale…Is Breaking Dawn worth seeing then? If you’re a fan it’s probably a movie you shouldn’t miss no matter what, if like me you’re not a fan then your life will not suffer from not seeing it, trust me on this one…
