Dac, or as it is more commonly known in the Star Wars universe Mon Calamari, is a festering sore within the fabric of the nascent Sith Empire. Its rebellious subjects have thwarted countless attempts by the Sith and their Imperial minions to re establish Sith rule over the planet. So rather than attempt to work out a viable solution what does the voice of the Dark Lord do…he orders Vul Isen, a Sith scientist and Darth Azard, a Quarren Sith Lord to unleash a catastrophic virus that will kill everyone and everything on the planet. In essence full scale genocide is ordered.

It’s a typical Sith response, one that you’d expect, if a problem proves too much of a hassle to resolve rather than actually knuckling down and doing something they just go and destroy it…end of story…literally. Which in the end makes the Sith look like a bunch of whingeing emo tattooed freaks rather than actually the scions and inheritors of an ancient dark side tradition. In fact if anything in this particular volume the Sith are far too much of the former and not enough of the latter…including the voice of Darth Krayt, the founder of the order, Darth Wyyrlok. Which is something of a change, considering that in previous issues of this series Darth Wyyrlok was a rather imposing and yet masterful character – rather than a being dominated by his emotions and letting his passions control himself.

But then again the title of this graphic novel is Extremes and that just doesn’t apply to the measures taken to bring rebellious systems into line nor the methods employed. It also indicates the nature that various groups and individuals are willing to take in order to achieve something…because things are starting to get very tight and constricted. Room to manoeuvre is becoming scarce and soon there will be a major collision of truly galactic proportions. But the interesting thing is that no one, not even the Sith, seems to be in any real position to handle such a collision.
Even though they present a united front to the galaxy at large the Sith are very much fractured and in danger of shattering. Although he proclaims himself the voice of the Dark Lord in reality Darth Wyyrlok is simply using the ideology and image of Darth Krayt to cement his own control over the order. He has killed Darth Krayt in the wake of the Vector crisis but uses him or rather his image to maintain dominion, he has to as he does not have the same degree of loyalty that his master had from the bulk of the order. And it is because of this that the Sith have become as I mentioned earlier a bunch of emo whingeing tattooed freaks…the focus that drove them has effectively been lost and all that they have is their passion…and nothing Darth Wyyrlok does is capable of restoring that focus.
Fortunately for Darth Wyyrlok though his opponents are disorganised and unsure of direction and agenda, all that will change though once they discover what is happening on Dac. Three days later after the issue of the genocide order the fighters of Rouge Squadron discover just what has happened. Rather than dither the Galactic Alliance Core Fleet and its leader Admiral Stazi spring into action to try and save as much of Dac and its various life forms as possible – the risk and danger doesn’t matter, what matters is the effort and attempt to strike a blow against the Sith and their efforts to destroy all that oppose them.
On the surface it would seem to be a hopeless battle, one that is intended to be a trap to enable the Sith to crush their foes mercilessly as well as level a rebellious planet in one foul swoop. One thing that hasn’t been factored into this whole equation though is hope…the Alliance forces know too well it’s a trap, it’s so freaking obvious they’d have to be stupid not to realise that fact. Yet they can’t walk away from this fight…for to do so would be as Admiral Stazi says to kill hope, and without hope the Sith win before even a single shot is fired. This is the kind of situation you’d expect from the pages of a major blockbuster manga like Bleach or Naruto, where the key protagonist finds himself in what seems to be a hopeless bind yet somehow through sheer guts manages to break through the wall and move onwards.
And that’s precisely what happens here, the Alliance move into establish an evacuation whilst using what assets they have available ready to counter the impending Sith trap. For them it’s not about victory or defeat, glory or shame, instead it’s about saving as many lives as possible at whatever cost. They aren’t worried about a military solution or even a political solution they seek to show a terrible resolve, a resolve so iron and unbending that no matter what dark machineries or science the Sith deploy in the ongoing efforts to establish One Sith, One Galaxy…sound familiar that little mantra?
Once I had my hands on this particular graphic novel I sat down and read it straight away, soon as I managed to get it out of the packing it had come in. I could not put it down, my eyes were glued to page after page of fantastic artwork and a compelling story, just what I’d been expecting from the creative team behind Legacy. It was as if I was watching a film and in my mind I could hear some of the music that has been associated with Star Wars playing as the drama unfolded. If you are a Star wars fan and you enjoy the expanded universe then this particular Legacy graphic novel volume is a must buy…especially when you realise that in the closing stages there is a monumental twist in the story that has a massive impact on events to come…
