PIERCING THE VEIL…

Well the Oscars are over again for another year and although I did not watch the awards ceremony, it’s just not my schooner of cleansing beverage, I did manage to catch on one of the local radio networks that Slumdog Millionaire scooped the pool, Sean Penn one best actor for his portrayal of politician Harvey Milk and Heath Ledger one best supporting actor for his chilling portrayal of the Joker in the Dark Knight. Interestingly if there is another Batman movie I doubt you’ll see the Joker again, even though the character itself didn’t die I think they’d find it very hard to fill the shoes of Heath Ledger in that role.
But what is there on the horizon for this year?
Its interesting to note that George Lucas has taken his animated feature as his first entry onto the world of the small screen not only in the US but here in the Land Down Under. There are rumours that there is meant to be a live action TV series of Star Wars debuting at some stage this year, although precisely when is something I have not heard of nor do I no of anyone who does know. George if you’re out their mate and reading this blog drop us a line on this particular matter.
Movie wise everyone is talking up the upcoming Watchmen film and Star Trek extravaganza, myself I’m not to sure that the Watchmen will translate well onto the silver screen and as far as the Trek franchise my feelings are that Star Trek X killed it stone dead, reanimating the dead can only end in tears just look at Pet Cemetery or read the Reanimator by H.P Lovecraft to see what tragedy that particular action can create. A recent glance at a major film industry magazine lead me to conclude that 2009 film wise looks like it will be the year of rather arty crafty movies, chick flicks/romantic comedies and actions films that everyone will rave about in various pundits but in the end could prove rather disappointing. Television doesn’t look much better, although ABC 2 is showing the steampunk anime Code Geass on Monday nights at 9.30pm and Cowboy Beebop the same night at a later time slot, somewhere around 11pm or thereabouts so there is some promise there.
Speaking of Cowboy Beebop apparently someone is planning to do a live action movie of this cult classic anime and Keanu Reeves is apparently slated to play the role of Spike Spiegel. This seems to be part of an interesting trend in America whereby it seems that Hollywood and US film makers rather than attempting to find original innovative projects are just latching onto various anime series and using them as the basis for live action films. Its already been done with Speed Racer and apparently there are attempts to make a live action Robotech in the works with Toby McGuire in the lead role of Rick Hunter. Don’t know if that would work frankly, and even though I am a big Naruto fan I shudder to think of the possibility that someone would do a live action version of it, some squeaky voiced precocious American kid telling how he intends to become Hokage…doesn’t bear thinking about.
I have no doubt that over the coming days, weeks and months the Green Lantern will be able to pierce the veil and discover something worthwhile, something to entertain, amuse and illuminate. Stay tuned…
