NARUTO SHIPPUDEN MOVIE 3: INHERITORS OF THE WILL OF FIRE

Category: Movies, Anime

No man they say is an island, although there are many in the world that do attempt to cut themselves off for a variety of reasons and motives. Friendship is an important thing for a great deal of people in the world we live in – although just how far would you go for your friends? How much value do you place on friendship and the bonds you have formed in your life, be they at a social, familial or professional level. No doubt you’re sitting there staring at your computer screen and wondering to yourself “Just what the heck is the Green Lantern waffling on about?” It’s that the core focus in this feature is the value of friendship and sometimes that it is wrong to sacrifice this very simple thing in the name of expediency and political agendas.

It all begins in the midst of a storm, and as you watch the opening sequences the animation here is just superb. The flash of lighting, the sweeping expanse of the storm front and the sudden appearance of the enemy; a vast manta like creature darting amongst the clouds with a predatory grace. For me it’s always amazing to see what various Japanese animation studios can do within the two dimensional realms and so far I have always been impressed, they always manage to convey a sense of the real, to take the suspension of disbelief, and make it work for them far more effectively than other filmmakers.
So a storm and a member of Team Kakashi, former ANBU operative, Sai flying through the air on one of his created creatures is what we’re presented with. He’s apparently surveying the ground below as part of an ongoing mission with the rest of his team. But as he undertakes his reconnaissance he is not aware of the menace lurking in the clouds with him until it is almost upon him – and then it’s literally too late. Capable of creating animals and other useful allies from sketching them Sai’s aerial mount is swiftly dispatched in a rain of exploding feathers from the manta like creature that has appeared from almost nowhere.

Falling from a great height over a landscape that looks like it could have been straight out of some kind of post apocalyptic nightmare you’d be forgiven for thinking that Sai is toast. Especially when you consider he hasn’t got a parachute, falling from that height is at least going to hurt if not leave him as a splat on the ground. Still luck or perhaps more like plot contrivance see him survive his fall and rushing through the rain, heedless of the danger or risk comes the rest of Team Kakashi, with Naruto at the lead, seeking to rescue him. They succeed in retrieving their fallen comrade and return back to the Hidden Leaf village to lick their wounds, Sai’s which are considerable and Naruto’s which while nasty looking aren’t as bad.
What could have prompted a team of Hidden Leaf shinobi to be out in such a desolate region of the world? And why were they attacked? The reason swiftly becomes apparent when it seems that Team Kakashi were involved in the investigation of disappearing shinobi, but not just any old run of the mill shuriken throwing and kunai wielding shinobi...no these were shinobi who had what is known in the Narutoverse as Kekkei Genkai. Kekkei Genkai are unique abilities that are passed down in certain lineages of shinobi, the Sharingan of the Uchiha is a Kekkei Genkai as was the ice mirror technique of Haku, the companion of Momochi Zabuza, Demon of the Hidden Mist. It seems that someone has been kidnapping such shinobi although for what reason is unknown...until the actual perpetrator decides to reveal his hand.
Hiruko, a ninja formerly of the Hidden Leaf, has been gathering Kekkei Genkai possessing shinobi for his agenda which is to transform himself into the perfect immortal ninja. He has gathered four of the five necessary elemental Kekkei Genkai when he gains the fifth he will have achieved this exalted state and be unstoppable. And the fifth ninja that he needs to complete his plan is none other than Kakashi Sensei, the only sharingan possessor who has not gone rouge. The sharp Kakashi realises just what the go is and with the Hokage, Tsunade, he concocts a plan to hopefully bring matters to a close. It will involve the sacrifice of his own life but this is a price he is willing to pay if it means protecting the village and its inhabitants.
Of course there is no way in hell that Naruto, the Leaf village’s number one maverick ninja, student of Kakashi Sensei and member of Team Kakashi is going to let this happen. He wants to save his teacher and friend, to not do so would be to break his own ninja way, his nindo. And as events unfold this becomes something of his rallying cry; he is willing to defy the rules and the law of his village not because he feels that he is someone above these things but rather how can they have any value when they demand the sacrifice of people for the so called greater good. As he points out to Shikamaru who is placed in charge of the team to bring him and his teammates back to the Leaf Village, what is the point of protecting something if you have to sacrifice someone close to you in order to achieve that goal? And what will the rest of the village think when they learn how they were protected?
This film will tug at your heart strings, I know that as the story unfolded and our plucky protagonist declared his intentions to all and sundry I sometimes felt a tear in my eyes as well as being stirred within myself. Let’s face it, it was very stirring dialogue which hit’s the spot and is bound to bring out an affirmative yeah from the deeps of you being, assuming you’re not dead or a statue. And that’s the beauty of a Naruto Shippuden flick, the stirring dialogue that is interspersed at key moments and indicates that the tempo is about to get ramped up another notch. Things always build up to a crescendo that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And when the dust does settle the denoument of this feature is somewhat of a surprise to say the least...if you’re a fan of all things Naruto then you can’t go past watching this movie, well worth the effort to track down...BELIEVE IT!
