Don't Call it a Comeback!

He's back! It's almost asthough the thundering, hulking centre never left. Queensland and Australia have waited twelve long years for a successor to arguably the game's best ever centre, and he has returned, be it in a different incarnation. The man they called 'The Big Fella', Mal Meninga, has been succeeded by 19 year-old Storm sensation Greg Inglis. The utility back's rise to fame has been so rapid; from playing Queensland Cup football for Brisbane Norths last year, to playing regular first grade for the Melbourne Storm, and earning Queensland and Australia representative berths, not to mention a grand final appearance, all in 2006. The imposing youngster who will more than likely make a centre spot his own for Australia in year's to come, has scored three tries in two tests for Australia from the wing. What's more, is that this Northern New South Wales product doesn't seem fazed by the roller coaster ride which is quickly becoming his football career. Having been offered a contract worth $2 million, keeping him at the Storm until 2010 doesn't appear to have given the wizz-kid any airs of arrogance. Where other rookies may have crumbled under the stardom, Inglis appears humble, and thankful, of the opportunities which have been afforded to him. For such a young player, Greg Inglis has a seasoned spirit; he is very critical of his performances, and despite creating two brilliant individual tries against the Kiwis last week, still promises that the best is yet to come. Whatever is destined for this prodigy, one thing is for sure, his career will be followed with awe and anticipation by every admirer of our beautiful game.
